Respect!
Today my year 12 collegues and me received our special ties. Although that doesn't sound much in itself, in the school community they earn quite a bit of respect, especially amongst the younger students. This seems extremely strange, but makes more and more sense when you think about the entire context.
Fashion and being cool is important in the average persons life. Wearing this seasons clothes gives people prestige and homour from those around them. When you think about this, and then think about life in a school where uniforms are compulsory.
Standing out from the crowd is desirable, and if only one group of people are allowed to wear something different, then that item is also desirable. Therefore these new flash ties are considered 'special' and everybody wants one.
It seems strange that all these external forces can apply in a regulated area such as schools.
