Is there a God?

The S-Bend has had quite a few religious posts recently, so I decided to have a discussion about the biggest religious question of all: Is there a God?

I'll first explain my own beliefs, so that you can see where I am coming from. I am a Catholic. Although I only go to Church of Christmas and Easter, I respect and commune with God in other ways. I don't take much notice of the 'Church' organization, but feel that people should be good and kind anyway. I try to base my opinions on facts, and it is because of this that I agree with Darwin and other scientists and their findings.

But the question at hand is about faith: faith in a supreme being or in other humans. Does something control our fates, or is Earth merely a testing ground?
There are so many unanswered questions; questions that may not be able to be answered.

Was the Universe created by God, or by an explosion of gases? One thing always bothers me with the big bang theory: If exploding gases created the universe, then where did the gases come from?

But there is one over ruling question: Does God exist?

For me, the answer is... Yes!

I enjoyed reading your Post.

"I don't take much notice of the 'Church' organization, but feel that people should be good and kind anyway"

Your last statement is in direct opposition to the bible which says that there is no one righteous not even one. Get your bible and have a look Romans 3:11

You will probably think to yourself "Well I may not be perfect but its not like I am as bad as Hitler or that wild bloke down the road."

God makes it crystal clear that he does not think like this. The Lord is totally righteous and declares that heaven is only for those who's sin will not be taken into account and are thus Justified of every sin small and large.

Does someone control our fates.

The answer to that is obvious. YES. here is a great verse from proverbs I remember.

"The Lot is cast into the lap but it's every decision is from the Lord."

Earth is not a testing ground the bible makes it clear that the only thing you can be sure of is death and judgement. There will be no after life chances to get it right.

You stated exactly what I think is a major problem with the big bang theory which no one has answered sufficiently that I know of. Where did the gases come from? Next if you find someone who actually believes all this stuff. Sit down with them and just let them explain away God as a creator. You look at them and think far out they have some faith to believe that stuff. This is why God says he confounds the wise and makes the foolish things of this world wise. (1 Corinthians)

The truth is before we can believe in God we must first believe that He is and you have done that. But may I add that even the demons believe and tremble.

The next thing is who is God? You need to find out which God is the true God. What is His Name is it Jehovah or YWAH or Allah?

The answer to this is clear the Lord God Almighty has a name that has power. There is no other name by which men must be saved then this name. This name is Jesus Christ.

Now the next thing I would like to point out is. The only way to know God, is if the Creator of the Universe makes Himself known TO YOU.
How else can you believe in His name and be saved. I don't want to believe just because charlie down the road says its a good idea to believe.

This is a prety daggy example but hang with me. Just say that there was one girl left in the world. And hundreds of guys. Now this girl was amazing and you knew that you wanted her but why would she love you after all there are thousands of other guys and you barely have a chance.

If you were any sort of a Man you would do everything possible to find out if this Girl loved YOU.

It's the same for Jesus you need to know if His love is just for you. A love that can save you. That you can have joy knowing that your sins past present and future are paid for by His death on the cross.

A few thoughts and perhaps a new perspective for you.

Kind Regards

I thank you for trying to give me a different perspective, and It seems obvious to me that you are a very strong Christian. Maybe it is because of this that I find your logic somewhat flawed.

All of your sources are from the Bible, and the Bible is not a book direct from Gods own hand (if it was it would be much more accurate and wouldn't have so many contradictions, especially seeing the Church 'edited' it in the 3rd century). The Bible was written by 30 or so elders (at least the old testament it), and is based on stories passed down from generations.

If I think I am not as bad as Hitler then I think that I will probably go to heaven. There has only be one perfect person, and he got crusified for it, so I think I'll find a happy medium.

I also think that most religions believe in the same God, no matter what his name is. He is pretty much the same person even if he is Jesus or Allah.

God is omnipotent by definition. Meaning he is all powerful. Consequently if God is all powerful thae he can create anything. Such as a rock SO heavy that even he can't lift it.

But if God can't lift this rock then he is not all powerful. If he's not all powerful what makes him better than us? Than any creature of this or any other planet?

The Bible is not an viable source for proving God's existance, just like using only Darwin is not enough to prove evolution
